Chandra LETG spectrum of the isolated neutron star RXJ1856
Abstract
We have obtained a 50 ksec Chandra LETG spectrum of the isolated non-pulsating neutron star RXJ1856, originally discovered by ROSAT, as part of the MPE GTO program. We will present the spectrum and compare it to model atmospheres. We will try to determine the gravitational redshift and/or the surface gravity, then we can constrain the mass. Recently, Walter (2000, ApJ submitted) determined the parallax (about 66 pc) of this object using the HST which, together with the X-ray flux, gives the radius. Mass and radius then determine the equation-of-state of this isolated neutron star.
